People-focused
As one of our five new stations for Melbourne's Metro Tunnel, Parkville’s design follows our ‘Open Metro’ philosophy – extending Melbourne’s famous public realm and lifestyle below ground, with fresh air and natural light flooding into generous underground spaces.

We didn't used to have this kind of great public transport. I had to either work where I live or live where I work. But you wouldn't be able to have the best of both worlds, now I can live near the beach, still getting to work in the city.
Melbourne Metro Passenger
Inventive
Parkville’s linear entrance and sequence of roof lights provide natural light to its underground concourse, with a glass feature roof that provides a leafy tree-lined view of Grattan Street, and plenty of natural light filtering through to the station concourse. The station creates new pedestrian connections between university and hospital, serving thousands of students, patients, workers and other travellers.

Responsible
All five stations on the Metro Tunnel are on track to achieve a 6 Star Green Star design accreditation from the Green Building Council of Australia, making them some of the most sustainable railway stations in the world. The ecological, material, and climate initiatives set a benchmark for future transport infrastructure, ensuring benefits extend to environmental performance, resource efficiency, and community wellbeing across Melbourne’s inner city.

We acknowledge and pay our respects to the Traditional Custodians of the land where we walk, work and live.
The design for all five stations as part of the Metro Tunnel is a world-class collaboration between leading design practices Hassell, WW+P and RSHP.
