The International Terminal in London was awarded in the Restoration/Renovation category in the Awards.

Our redevelopment of Waterloo was recognised for expanding passenger capacity and facilities at the UK’s largest and busiest railway station. Below five new platforms for domestic rail services, the project also incorporates The Sidings: a 130,000 sq ft retail development providing a range of bars, shops and cafes, as well as an immersive theatre experience.

When Eurostar services moved from Waterloo to St Pancras in 2007, the international terminal at Waterloo became redundant. Our project brought new life to this extraordinary building, expanded public transport connections into central London, and created new retail and leisure facilities that support passengers as well as the local economy.

The project was described as 'demonstrat[ing] that converted structures from the past can coexist with future innovation, keep an urban memory alive and become a catalyst for an ambitious, longer-term plan for the future development of London Waterloo and the surrounding South Bank area.'

Working as partner rail architects for the project, we created an elegant structure that connects the former Eurostar terminal with the original station, creating a generous new concourse and radically improving connections for passengers. Areas that were previously used as waiting areas, security and passport control were remodelled to transform facilities for travellers as well as local residents and workers.

The International Architecture Awards are the world's foremost international distinguished building awards programme for new architecture, interior architecture, landscape architecture and urban planning.

We believe that infrastructure should enrich places as well as enable movement, creating structures that are memorable and deeply connected to the people who use them. This award recognises our continued investment in innovation, collaboration and design excellence as we help shape infrastructure worldwide.

We would like to thank our clients, partners and project teams whose collaboration makes this work possible, and congratulate all of this year's finalists for their contribution.
