Reflections on 'Making Matters' - a Modelmaking Exhibition
We were delighted to participate in the recent AiM x MSA 'Making Matters' Exhibition in Manchester.
After joining them in Venice in 2025, it was a privilege to again be involved with the talented team behind these events from the Architects Index of Modelmaking (AiM), Manchester School of Architecture (MSA) and the European Cultural Centre (ECC).
At WW+P our identity is rooted in a consistent approach and process, with modelmaking fully integrated into how we think, design and communicate. Our involvement in 'Making Matters' offered a valuable opportunity to reflect on modelmaking within our practice while placing it in a broader collective context. The exhibition’s focus on process and experimentation closely aligns with how we work, where making is central to how we think and design.
The work on display reinforced the idea that models are not simply representational, but active tools in design development. Rather than illustrating resolved ideas, they help us test concepts, often revealing insights that digital methods alone cannot - a feeling shared by the other like-minded firms exhibiting.
The exhibition highlighted the value of iteration and hybrid making processes. Our combination of hand-crafted techniques and rapid prototyping mirrors this balance, allowing for both creative exploration and technical precision.
Alongside the exhibition, we took part in two key events - the Festival Day and the Closing Panel Discussion - sharing invigorating conversations with practitioners, educators and students alike.
Every model serves a purpose; early ones explore ideas and shape decisions, while later ones communicate a refined vision.
Toby Loughton, Head of Modelmaking
The exhibition served as both an affirmation and prompt. In an increasingly digital profession, it was a reminder that the physical act of making remains essential to thoughtful, materially grounded architecture.
Thanks to AiM, MSA and the ECC for hosting such a fantastic event and for having us along for the journey.
