People-focused
Sydenham Station and Junction forms part of the Sydney Metro City & Southwest line — a 30-kilometre extension connecting Chatswood to Bankstown. The upgrade supports social and economic growth by reconnecting two distinct communities through new entrances, plazas, and a fully accessible aerial concourse. Collaboration with residents, artists, and local businesses shaped a design that celebrates Sydenham’s creative identity while improving safety, accessibility, and everyday journeys.
Inventive
Keeping one of Sydney’s busiest transport interchanges operational throughout construction required innovative problem-solving. Working closely with engineering and construction partners, the team developed lightweight modular trusses that could be easily transported and assembled on site. This approach reduced disruption, shortened construction time, and delivered cost efficiencies. The design reimagines the passenger experience, enhancing movement, daylight, and visibility while respecting the station’s heritage fabric.
Responsible
The project creates two new public plazas that foster community interaction and local enterprise. These spaces include cafés, shaded seating, and multi-purpose pavilions — establishing a lively civic heart and supporting the area’s transition into a creative employment hub. The design promotes sustainability in both environmental and social terms, encouraging active travel, improving accessibility, and nurturing a diverse, resilient local economy.
