Prix Versailles has named Town Hall as one of their seven 'World's Most Beautiful Stations' in 2026.

Town Hall forms one of our five new stations for Melbourne's Metro Tunnel, which also includes Arden at North Melbourne, Parkville, State Library, and Anzac on St Kilda Road. The architecture of the Metro Tunnel integrates a line-wide approach, creating enduring landmarks, distinctive and beautiful station interiors and buildings and their surrounds that Melburnians will embrace with pride for generations to come.

Town Hall’s design follows our ‘Open Metro’ philosophy, with fresh air and natural light flooding into generous underground spaces. The station features a civic loggia, a protected meeting place for a rejuvenated city square. It responds to the dense CBD with dramatic entrances and cathedral-like vaulted volumes below. The loggia is an architectural continuation of the crypt, an engaging below ground space, which extends the city square experience within the station itself.

All five stations on the Metro Tunnel are on track to achieve a 6 Star Green Star design accreditation from the Green Building Council of Australia, making them some of the most sustainable railway stations in the world. The ecological, material, and climate initiatives set a benchmark for future transport infrastructure, ensuring benefits extend to environmental performance, resource efficiency, and community wellbeing across Melbourne’s inner city.

In the realm of transport stations, the stakes are high when it comes to creating cultural expressions that are simultaneously beautiful, fashionable and sustainable, that reinforce passenger mobility whilst revitalising local neighbourhoods and that support modernisation whilst showing respect for existing architecture. ... the winning travel hubs give us proof that 21st century passenger stations can be the bridges to a more desirable future.

Jérôme Gouadain, Prix Versailles Secretary General

Each station design on the Metro Tunnel maximises natural light and fresh air, creating passenger spaces that are truly world-class. Our focus on connection and visibility ensures travellers feel part of the flow of the city – the stations are not just places of travel, but seamless extensions of Melbourne’s public realm.

Rob Naybour, Chair, WW+P
