Melbourne’s five new Metro Tunnel stations have been shortlisted for four awards in the Victorian Chapter of the Australian Institute of Architects (AIA) Awards Program – celebrating design excellence and its contribution to communities across Australia and beyond.

The design for the Metro Tunnel is a world-class collaboration between leading design practices Hassell, WW+P and RSHP, as part of the CYP Design and Construction Joint Venture.

The project is shortlisted in categories for Public Architecture, Urban Design, Sustainable Architecture and the Melbourne Prize. The Institute’s Awards Program enables public and peer recognition of the innovative work from AIA members, and provides the Institute with a valuable mechanism to promote architects and architecture across Australia and internationally.

The Metro Tunnel opened to the public in November 2025 – considered the biggest transformation of Victoria’s rail network in 40 years. The architecture of the Metro Tunnel integrates a line-wide approach, creating enduring landmarks, distinctive and beautiful station interiors and buildings and their surrounds that Melburnians will embrace with pride for generations to come.

We’re immensely proud to be shortlisted for four awards that recognise the profound impact that architecture and thoughtful infrastructure can have on our cities. This Metro Tunnel is truly one of a kind, yet it feels immediately at home. Cities are layered, busy, ever-evolving places, and familiarity is one of their most powerful navigational tools. It shapes the stories we tell, the directions we give to friends and loved ones, the landmarks we carry in our minds. Good design goes far beyond aesthetics; it creates the memorable qualities that help people move confidently through their city.

Will Riley, Managing Director, Australia | NSW Architect #11684

The winners of the Victorian Chapter will be announced at a ceremony on 19 Jun 2026.
