Byford Rail Extension wins two Western Australia infrastructure and engineering awards
Byford Rail Extension has been recognised at the 2026 Western Australia (WA) Earth Awards and Engineers Australia Excellence Awards.
Engineers Australia celebrated the region's most distinguished engineers and engineering projects at the WA 2026 Engineers Australia Excellence Awards held at Optus Stadium in September. The METRONET Byford Rail Extension picked up WA Project of the Year, awarded for "establish[ing] new benchmarks in engineering excellence, sustainability and community-centred design."
October brought the annual WA Earth Awards: organised by the Civil Contractors Federation, Western Australia, the awards were an annual celebration of the civil construction industry’s excellence in the region. The METRONET Byford Rail Extension project won the $150M-plus category.

Our design for the stations on the Byford Rail Extension combined user experience, practical necessities, cost-effectiveness, and a commitment to crafting a built environment that respects the local culture and surroundings. The design adopted a modular approach, employing consistent structural grids and key design elements, while giving both Byford and Armadale stations their individual, unique character.
The design was heavily influenced by linear qualities of the local landscape, including the geological layers and natural patterns in the area such as hills, rock formations, water and wind. Our design celebrates and integrates these natural features into the station architecture and surrounding public areas, with the goal of converting the precinct into a civic community hub, encouraging future development in both Armadale and Byford.
Congratulations to all fellow finalists and winners.
